An agricultural revolution
Just outside of Havana, visit Finca (Farm) Martha to meet Fernando Funes Monzote. PhD, agriculture scientist and international speaker, Mr. Funes one day decided to change the title in his business card to Campesino (Farmer in Spanish) -literally.
He left the comfort of Vedado to settle on a badly eroded, bushy hillside and began digging a well into the rocky soil. After several months breaking through layers of rock with picks and hand tools, his vision began to take shape. Named after his late mother, the finca grows more than 60 varieties of vegetables, fruits and herbs and high quality honey is produced, supplying organic produce to many of Havana’s top-rated paladares.
Prince Charles himself visited the farm to learn about Funes’ radical vision on Cuban agriculture and the inspiration behind his colossal effort.
